Why oil awareness? You've become aware of peak oil - the theory that global supplies of oil and natural gas are in decline, while demand for energy continues to increase. The growing gap between supply and demand will have profound effects. Scientists and environmentalists have warned of this situation for decades, but as long as oil has been cheap, and peak oil has been only a theory, there's been no political will to do anything about it. Recently, a flood of data consistent with the peak oil hypothesis, as well as rising fuel prices, has made energy issues a top public concern. While more Americans are aware of the complete fuel depletion problem than ever before, most see only temporary price hikes and shortages, and don't connect the dots. The big picture is immeasurably more daunting. The Hirsch report, commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy, concluded that peak oil is real and inevitable, and we must begin preparing for its effects now, by immediately begining our transition beyond fossil fuels. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, (R-Md). has started a Peak Oil Caucus within the U.S. House of Representatives. Many news articles are addressing the matter.
The Post Carbon Institute is a think tank and network working on adaptation to a fuel-depleted future. As the Minnesotan chapter of the Institute, we are proud to be part of a worldwide network of activists. Our goals are to raise public awareness of the problem and sustainable responses, to work with others making Minnesota and the Twin Cities more sustainable, and to prepare ourselves as individuals and as communities for the coming transition.
There will be formal meetings and informal smaller meetups. These help facilitate discussion between individuals and organizations focused on transitioning Minnesota towards its post-carbon future.
