Introduction

I live in Inman Square, Cambridge. I work for the Mass. Coalition for Healthy Communities. I am active in the Green-Rainbow Party. I think we need to build the social, economic, and political networks that will get us through the Long Emergency.

What is your biggest pet peeve about society today?

That we're in denial about our unsustainable way of life, which is preventing adequate response.

What is your greatest source of hope in these times?

The millions of people out there who are not sitting idly by while the Arctic melts and the economy unravels.

How did you first hear about "peak oil"?

Someone bringing the book The Long Emergency to my group and urging us to form a sustainability committee.

What elibeck is saying about this Meetup Group

Because the economic system -- fully dependent on cheap oil -- is starting to unravel, while the environmental devastation from this system is starting to kick us in the ass. We need to build the resilient local economies and communities that can prevent the worst effects and get us through crisis, and we have the opportunity to redesign our society in line with core human values.
