Looking to meet green business leaders in the Calgary area? Join REAP Members and other business owners/operators on the first Thursday of each month for a green business networking event. It's an informal gathering where people running environmentally and socially responsible businesses can come to have a drink, meet new people and share ideas about sustainable business. There is no cost to attend. Just show up, participate and buy your own drinks. Thursday, March 5 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm Café Koi, 100, 1011 - 1 Street SW Ross Hahn (CEO) and Tim Neis (VP) of SwizzleSticks SalonSpa will be there. They welcome the opportunity to chat with you about how SwizzleSticks SalonSpa is making a difference in the Calgary community and how you might be able to collaborate. Here are just some of the reasons why SwizzleSticks SalonSpa is in our member spotlight this month: * Tim and Ross have always felt that respecting the earth and its' inhabitants was the only right answer for business. Long before it was fashionable, they sought out partners, like Aveda, to help them build the business responsibly. * Their vision is to demonstrate to guests and other businesses that you can have a profitable business model while showing leadership in environmental and humanitarian issues. * SwizzleSticks SalonSpa became a Founding Member of REAP to network with like-minded local businesses that are interested in sustainability. It wants our collective momentum to continue to grow so that we can all show Calgary that being green isn't a fad, it's an achievable lifestyle. * SwizzleSticks SalonSpa can help other businesses evaluate their current suppliers and identify greener partners. For example, it recently switched to Canon photocopiers because research showed that Canon had the strongest sustainability mandate. SwizzleSticks SalonSpa chooses partners based not just on their end product, but on the whole philosophy of the company. * Ross and Tim are looking for help with composting for the staff lunch room. Come meet them and other business leaders on March 5 and see how together we are building a more sustainable city.

Step It Up Alberta is a non-partisan group calling for leadership on environmental issues from the people who can make the most difference: governments, corporations, and institutions. We want to see real action against climate change: - an absolute cap on greenhouse gas emissions, - a commitment to significant reductions in the short and long term, & - investment in a carbon-conscious economy. Please join us as we work on the following three campaigns: - Green Fingers: documenting citizen support for environmental issues through video and photos - We Didn’t Wait Until 2020: A write-in campaign to criticize the Alberta government’s long timeline for reducing emissions and to ask for investment in alternative energy. - Community Leadership: A package of resources to facilitate environmental awareness in community settings, beginning with faith-based groups Our next meeting will be held on Feb. 9th at 7PM at the Pembina Institute office downtown at 608 7 Street SW (1/2 block north from the LRT line on 7th Street SW). Please RSVP if planning to attend. For more info, go to http://www.stepitupa lberta.ca. Note: The entrance will be locked and so you must call 403-269-3344 x0 to be let in.

Calgary Chapter of The Council of Canadians is pleased to present a public forum: Dr. Preston McEachern will present on the Alberta Environment policies in place for protecting, monitoring, and restoring the environment. His presentation will update us on the current environmental status of the Fort McMurray area, and the quality and quantity of water in the Athabasca River. He will comment on future technologies (like carbon sequestration) and their potential implications for curbing global warming. Dr. McEachern will also discuss "myths and mis-information that organizations like the COC spread, which are not helpful in the on-going public discussion." Note: Dr. Preston McEachern is not a MLA, so he does not set the political policy. Contact: Mel Teghtmeyer Co-chair, COC Calgary Chapter 403-295-8123 meltec@shaw.ca
